First Virtual Curb College Mentorship Program Leads to Real-Life Jobs, Internships during Pandemic

As students were sent home after spring break and the music industry began to relatively shut down, Curb College’s Jenny Lokey, student enrichment coordinator, and Caroline Rupard, career development specialist, worked together to think outside the box for Belmont students.

Internships are an integral part of a career in the music business and it looked like they were not going to happen over the summer. To pivot, Lokey and Rupard created the Virtual Curb College Mentorship Program for students and May 2020 graduates as a way for them to continue their professional development when so many opportunities were put on hold. In total, 110 students and May graduates, as well as 23 industry professionals from across the country participated.

Students were greatly impacted by these mentorship groups, learning about the industry and some even landing real-life internships for the fall and jobs through connections with professionals made in the program.

One unique group took their mentorship to the next level once they decided to continue meeting after the initial program had ended. A May 2020 graduate who is living and working in Los Angeles, California, had the idea to organize a virtual songwriting camp as their final project for the mentorship group. Mentor Rachel Wein from Prescription Songs agreed to guide them through the process as an extension of their mentorship.

The group of five secured 25 songwriters and producers, most of which were current or former Belmont students, and acted as matchmakers to determine co-writing sessions with writers that would be compatible in personality and music style. They scheduled 20 different co-writing rooms over the four days of the camp, and after the camp finished, the writers had two weeks to record and produce demos of their songs.

“We compiled all their demos and lyrics into a playlist on SongSpace, so they could hear each other’s work,” May 2020 songwriting graduate Martin Chiesl reflected. “After listening to all the demos, Rachel said she was surprised by the overall quality of the songs from the camp–everyone did a really good job. She even sent some of the songs around to a few of her industry contacts. Organizing the camp was a challenge for our group, but we learned a lot in the process! It was fulfilling to hear that the writers had a really positive experience.”

Local Buzz Radio Features Student Band Sugar in the Gas Tank

Sugar in the Gas Tank is a four-piece band giving a new take on the Alternative/Pop Punk music scene of the early 2000s, made up of Belmont students including music business and songwriting double major Luke Dapuzzo on vocals and guitar, music business major CJ Christianson on guitar, audio engineering major Reese Marshall on drums, and audio engineering major Carlos Chavez on bass.

The Local Buzz, a Nashville rock radio station, has been promoting the band, most recently through spotlighting them as the “Local Buzz Cut” of the week, playing their song on air every day at 2 p.m.

The Local Buzz also included the band’s song “Bye” on its article “5 Songs You Should Hear Right Now.” Radio personality Andy Herrin wrote, “I found myself singing their song, “Bye,” in my head all day long. It’s the kind of song I feel like you’d hear in a movie at the end when a person realizes he made the right decision. They’re a newer band to the scene in Nashville and if this song is a sign of what’s to come, when shows come back, I feel like these boys will be selling out clubs for sure.”

Prismatics Finish in Top 16 of National A Cappella Competition

Earlier this year, Belmont students in an a cappella group known as Prismatics were selected to compete in the first-ever virtual international college championship of its kind, “UpStagedAID: One World, Every Student Voice,” hosted by UpStaged™ Entertainment Group (UpStaged) and the National Collegiate Performing Arts (NCPA)™.

The unprecedented competition (modeled after NCAA’s March Madness) began with 64 of the nation’s best and most award-winning college groups from a nationwide pool of more than 5,000. 32 teams, including the Prismatics, qualified for seeding into the competition bracket, where they competed head-to-head with others in their bracket for fan votes.

Although the Prismatics did not make it into the ““Ultimate Octet” final eight, the group was taken from the main bracket’s “Singing Sixteen” Round Two and entered into the “All-American Encore Rounds,” where they continued to accumulate fan votes. The group can be proud of this accomplishment as they pushed past 5,000+ nationwide college a cappella teams, which were initially reduced to 64 for the tournament, and then to the 16 All-American Finalists.

The Belmont Prismatics, founded in 2015, have established themselves as a college a cappella power, united by shared passion to create global human connection by using their music platform to raise social awareness and provide uplifting messages. They are ICAA award winners and their acclaimed “Alive” recording was nominated for a prestigious 2020 CASA video award.

Wigal Profiled by Nashville Women in Film and Television Magazine

Sara Wigal, director of Publishing and assistant professor in Belmont’s Cinema, Television & Media Department, was featured in a December 2020 magazine profile in the Nashville Women in Film and Television’s monthly publication, written by publishing and Spanish student Sophie Jefferson.

The piece focuses on Wigal’s involvement with the Next Chapter Society, a group of Nashville leaders who serve as representatives of the Nashville Public Library Foundation. A few years ago, the group decided to ramp up its fundraising mission in order to support the mission of the library and support the community and its needs. The organizations support child and adult literacy and provide programs and initiatives for both.

Jefferson writes, “Wigal’s love of literacy, mentorship and the written word has guided her throughout her career and has led her to give back to the community through volunteering. She gives back while capitalizing on her strengths and talents, and her service will benefit the community for years to come.”

Alumna Creates Travel Blog, Spotlighted in Wilson Post for Overcoming Hardships

When COVID hit early in 2020, Belmont alumna Allison Bohrman was laid off from her job as an accountant and decided to push past her devastation to do something she has always been passionate about: travel. Her adventures led her to launch her travel blog, Forever on Vacay, and she was recently featured in an article in the Wilson Post.

Bohrman was already an experienced globe trekker before setting off on her own, having seen 23 countries and having spent two weeks in Bali at a blogger’s campus in 2018. With the extra time on her hands, she set off on two lengthy, solo road trips in June 2020. She explored California and the Pacific Northwest from Los Angeles to Seattle and put 2,400 miles on her vehicle. Her second trip took her much further as she explored National Parks and many of the U.S. states. She learned a lot about camping on the way and was able to share her new tips with other beginners.

Her blog offers tips on travelling smarter with destination guides, gear recommendations, tips and more. She hopes her story serves as encouragement to those who want to travel but feel powerless.

She told the Post, “My long-term goal with the business is to get sponsors but another aspect of the plan is to provide travel and event guides. I’ll have itineraries, packing lists, gear guides, etc., but I plan to also include some personal development tips to challenge readers to identify ways they’re holding themselves back from taking trips or doing things like this.”

Follow along with Bohrman’s travels and tips on her Instagram page.

Nursing Alumnus Brad Koss Named President-Elect of Tennessee Association of Nurse Anesthetists

Brad Koss, a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) and 2005 graduate of the Belmont University School of Nursing, was recently named the 2020-21 president-elect of the Tennessee Association of Nurse Anesthetists (TANA). Koss, who is the CRNA Manager of Education at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, will take office as the TANA president in October 2021.

“It is both humbling and an honor to have been elected by my peers to represent them as a leader in our profession and to help carry forth the tradition of serving to protect our practice and be a voice for more than 2,000 CRNAs across our great state,” said Koss, a resident of Franklin. “My hope as we make the turn to 2021 is that the new year will bring about renewed promise for us as a nation and as providers of anesthesia.”

CRNAs are highly educated, advanced practice registered nurses who safely deliver anesthesia care to patients of all ages and in every type of healthcare setting where anesthesia is required for surgery, labor and delivery, trauma stabilization and pain management. Across the United States, CRNAs administer more than 49 million anesthetics to patients each year.

As anesthesia and airway experts, during the ongoing pandemic CRNAs on the front lines are managing Covid-19 ICUs and providing one-to-one care to critically ill patients. “CRNAs have demonstrated their dedication and compassion by caring for the sickest of patients during this extreme time,” said Koss. “Serving in operating rooms, on airway teams and in critical care settings, CRNAs humbly demonstrate their ability to safely and effectively serve their patients and communities through all facets of healthcare.”

Last August, Koss took on the role of CRNA Manager of Education at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, but 20 years ago he was working as a manager of an IT Helpdesk team and data center. After nearly a decade in IT, Koss knew he wanted to pursue a different career path. Taking a sharp detour, he began his nursing education at Belmont, went on to earn both his Master of Science in Nurse Anesthesia (2009) and Doctor of Nurse Anesthesia Practice degree (2020) from the Middle Tennessee School of Anesthesia (MTSA) in Madison, and today practices as a CRNA at Vanderbilt.

Koss’s career highlights include being inducted into the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing in 2005 and being honored with MTSA’s Mary Elizabeth “Ikey” DeVasher Alumni Distinguished Service Award in 2016.

Reflecting on his 11 years in the profession, Koss said, “I truly value and appreciate the work that I do on a daily basis. Being a CRNA is a great profession where one’s value is put to the test every single day. The greatest part of being a CRNA is that no patient is ever the same and we are constantly required to be our best.”
