Retha Hill, vice president of content development at BET.com, the website of the BET cable television network, will discuss online storytelling and how BET uses the web, during an appearance at Belmont Monday, April 3, sponsored by the New Century Journalism program. Hill will speak at 10 a.m. Monday, April 3 in room 117 of the Leu Center for the Visual Arts. Members of the media are invited to attend.

Alpha Chi Member Elected Representative for Region
The Region III Convention of the Alpha Chi National Honor Scholarship
Society was held last weekend at the Hilton in Wilmington, N.C. Region
III includes Alabama, Washington, D.C., Florida, Georgia, Mississippi,
North Carolina, Puerto Rico, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia.
At the convention, Lindsey K. Winger and Mary Elizabeth Hooker
represented Belmont and made musical presentations. Lindsey and Mary
also attended the Region III business meeting. At the meeting, Lindsey
was elected to be the Student Representative for Region III, one of
only seven such students nationally. Lindsey spoke about why she
wanted to represent the region at the national level, and she was voted
into office over two other candidates. One of Belmont’s Alpha Chi
members, Scott Goudeau, won one of nine Alfred H. Nolle Scholarships
for 2006 at the national convention in San Antonio.
• Alpha Chi is a national honor society that admits students from all
academic disciplines.
• Membership is limited to the top 10 percent of an institution’s
juniors and seniors.
• Invitation to membership comes only through an institutional
chapter. A college seeking a chapter must grant baccalaureate degrees
and be regionally accredited.
• Alpha Chi has 300 chapters, located in almost every state and in
Puerto Rico, and inducts more than 11,000 members annually.
Alpha Chi’s next Induction Ceremony will take place on Friday, April 21
at 10 a.m. in the Massey Board Room. The keynote speaker will be Dr.
Andi Stepnick, Chair of the Sociology Department and recipient of the
Presidential Faculty Achievement Award for 2005-06. A reception will
take place immediately following the ceremony. All faculty, staff and
students are invited to attend. Prospective members will be asked to
designate a “faculty sponsor” who has been important in that student’s
intellectual and personal growth, and the sponsor will be asked to
“pin” the student as he or she is received into membership.
Psychology Student Presents at Major Conference
Melinda Baker, a senior Psychology and English major, has been selected
to present her research completed with Dr. Michael Sullivan, assistant
professor of psychology, “The Use of Religion to Counter Morality
Salience Cues”, at the 18th annual meeting of the Association for
Psychological Science (APS). The meeting, held May 25-28 in New York
City, drew the most presentation submissions ever; more than 50 percent
more than last year’s conference.
The Association for Psychological Science provides scientists with
opportunities essential to achieving excellence in research. To this
end, APS holds the only national Annual Convention dedicated
exclusively to scientific exchange across all areas of psychology.
Belmont Speech Team Wins 1st at Nationals
By over 100 points, the Belmont University Speech and Debate Team won first place in speech team sweeps at the National Christian College Forsenics Invititional at John Brown University. The team won third place overall. The team competed March 18 – 20 in Siloam Springs, Ark. Here is the breakdown of results:

New Insights on Managing Entrepreneurial Growth
Dr. Jeff Cornwall, director of the Center for Entrepreneurship, offers some insights from Eric Flamholtz, co-author of the book Growing Pains: Transitioning from an Entrepreneurship to a Professionally Managed Firm, on campus for a lecture yesterday, in this post at his weblog The Entrepreneurial Mind. Flamholtz is a professor at the Anderson School of Business at UCLA, where he teaches on managing entrepreneurial organizations; human resource management and organizational behavior. His Belmont lecture was part of the Moench Entrepreneurship Lecture Series.

Moser on Music Copyright, a new in-depth analysis of copyright law and its application to the music industry by David Moser, Associate Professor in the Mike Curb College of Entertainment & Music Business at Belmont University, has been published by ArtistPro/Thomson Course Technology. Understanding copyright law is particularly relevant today, as Internet file sharing and other new ways of distributing music have made front-page news headlines.
Belmont Connections Program Schedule Announced

Belmont Hosts 6th Annual Family Literacy Day April 1
Belmont University’s 6th Annual Family Literacy Day, will take place, rain or shine, on Saturday, April 1st from 1-4 p.m. The event, called Read With Me, is aimed at children from pre-K through grade 6 and their families and is designed to celebrate the joys of reading. The primary focus of the event is Reading Circles, hosted by various groups on campus such as the Black Student Alliance, the foreign language majors, the Student Athlete Council and numerous fraternities and sororities. Each group picks a different theme and has variety of books for all ages.
Former Kentucky Gov. Martha Layne Collins To Speak at Belmont
Former Kentucky Gov. Martha Layne Collins will speak at Belmont University on Thursday, March 30, on the subject of leadership, culture and diversity, in a free event sponsored by the Belmont University College of Business Administration’s Executive-in-Residence Program. Collins was governor of Kentucky from 1983 to 1987. Last year she became chairman and CEO of the Kentucky World Trade Center. Her speech, titled “Leadership in an Everchanging World,” is scheduled for 4:45 p.m., March 30, in the Neely Dining Room of the Massey Business Center. Registration is required. CMT Music Awards at Curb Event Center April 10
Belmont University is proud to host the 2006 CMT Music Awards on April 10, 2006, in the Curb Event Center. CMT’s annual award show honors the fans’ choices for best videos of the year. The CMT Music Awards are country music’s only fan-voted awards. Performers slated to take center stage at the show include Toby Keith, Kenny Chesney, Rascal Flatts, Trace Adkins, Gretchen Wilson, Brooks & Dunn and Sugarland. Jeff Foxworthy will return to host the 2006 CMT Music Awards airing live April 10 on CMT. During his first year as host, Foxworthy arrived onstage at the 2005 awards show by swinging in on a crystal chandelier similar to the one used by Shania Twain in her “Party for Two” video.
