Amanda Stinnett, Bethany Thomas and Kristal Wicks, senior biology majors, presented posters on their research completed with Dr. Darlene Panvini, assistant professor of biology, at the 67th Association of Southeastern Biologists (ASB) Annual Meeting in Gatlinburg, Tenn., March 29-April 1. The conference had the largest attendance and most poster and presentation submissions ever.
McWhorter Honored by Beta Gamma Sigma Chapter at Belmont
Stuart McWhorter, co-founder and president of Franklin, TN-based Clayton Associates was installed as an honorary inductee of Beta Gamma Sigma, an honor society serving AACSB International (The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business) accredited business programs. The induction ceremony was at 5:00 p.m. on April 11th at Belmont University. “Stuart is a wonderful friend of the university,” says Pat Raines, Dean of the College of Business Administration at Belmont. “He is an outstanding mentor to our business students both for his many successes in the business arena and for his community work. He is a true inspiration to our students.”
Dr. Cornwall’s Indispensable Blog
The Entrepreneurial Mind, a daily weblog by Dr. Jeff Cornwall, director of Belmont’s Center for Entrepreneurship, gets a mention on the website of U.S. News & World Report magazine, which calls the blog “indispensable.” U.S. News is only the latest business publication to recognize the value of the blog. Students in Free Enterprise Team Win Regionals, Head to Nationals,
Belmont University’s Students in Free Enterprise Team has won first place in the southeast regional SIFE competition, and will next compete in the national competition in Kansas City, Mo., May 21-23. This is an incredible achievement for a team created only one year ago. The Belmont team is coached by assistant finance professor John Gonas. About 800 universities around the country take part in similar events. SIFE also sponsors a World Cup that involves universities from other countries. Last year’s international winner was University of Zimbabwe.
School of Music Well Represented at Regional Vocal Competition
The Belmont University School of Music was well represented at the Mid-South Region of the National Association of Teachers of Singing competition held March 31, 2006, at Carson Newman College.
From the studio of Dr. Lawrence Bond, Jake Griffin won the Adult Beginners Division and Emily Apuzzo place second in the Senior Women’s Division.
Dr. Kristi Whitten‘s student, Ashely Kozak, won third place in the Sophomore Women’s Division.
Other students who competed were Samantha Crowder, Sarah DeVore, Reness Hussey, Meagan MacKinnon, Amanda Miller and Michael Wentz.
The competition is designed to assist classical singers preparing to launch a professional career. Over 300 singers from Kentucky and Tennessee colleges and universities competed at the Mid-South Region competition.

Littlejohn Honored at Conference
Dr. Ronnie Littlejohn, chair of the philosophy department at Belmont University, was recently honored as the “Volunteer of the Year” at the Association of Regional Centers of the Asian Studies Development Program (ASDP) at the Sheraton Hotel in Nashville.
The ASDP is a joint program of the University of Hawaii and the East-West Center initiated in 1990 to increase American understanding of the Asia-Pacific region through college and university faculty development. The ASDP mission is to infuse Asian content and perspectives into the core curriculum at Amercian two-year and four-year colleges and universities through programs that help faculty expand and refine their knowledge and teaching of Asia. The ASDP network includes over 400 colleges in 49 states with 20 schools designated as ASDP regional centers.
Alpha Chi Member Recognized Nationally
Belmont University Alpha Chi member Scott Goudeau was recently recognized as one of nine Alfred H. Nolle Scholars for 2006. Goudeau’s winning scholarly essay was read at the meeting of the Alpha Chi National Council in San Antonio.
Alpha Chi membership is the highest academic honor awarded by Belmont University. Its requirements are to be in the top 10 percent of any major in the junior and senior classes and to demonstrate outstanding moral character.

Hispanic students receive scholarships during celebration at Belmont
For some, yesterday’s Fiesta Belmont in the heart of the university’s campus here was a chance to dance, shop and savor homemade enchiladas. For Heider Vargas, the celebration of Hispanic culture brought him $1,000 closer to his dream of becoming a physical therapist. … The scholarships announced yesterday during the festivities benefited participants of Hispanic Achievers, a YMCA mentoring program for Hispanic children, teens and adults. Latin Street Fair & “Read With Me” Make Belmont Campus A Family Destination Today
Two events running simultaneously today at Belmont University make the Belmont campus the place to be for anyone seeking family-friendly entertainment: Fiesta Belmont and Read With Me. Fiesta Belmont: Nashville’s Latin Music Street Fair returns to Belmont University today (April 1). The street fair features a day-long schedule of continuous Latin music performances, Latin food vendors, kid’s activities, and Latin dance groups.
