Dr. Rodney Stark, professor of social sciences at Baylor University, comes to Belmont University Monday, March 24, to present a talk exploring the evangelistic tactic of door-to-door missionizing, and why it persists despite seemingly long odds of success. Stark, a sociologist of religion who teaches in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Baylor, has authored 26 books including The Rise of Christianity, nominated for a Pulitzer Prize in 1996. Stark’s talk, titled “Knock, Knock: The Benefits of ‘Irrational’ Missionizing,” addresses why some religious groups persist in door-to-door missionizing when they know the odds of success are small.

Speech and Debate Students Succeed at Tournament
Melanie Bengston and Renee Reyle of the Belmont Speech & Debate Team attended the 24th Annual Novice National Tournament at Berry College in Mount Berry, Ga.
Out of 40 debaters, Bengston and Reyle placed third and fifth, respectively in the Overall Individual Speaker Awards.
Bengston was named the Novice National Champion in Informative Speaking.
Belmont University won first place in Division III of the tournament.
Psychology Student Invited to Conference
Eileen Marks, a Belmont psychology major and Engaged Scholar, was selected to attend the American Psychological Association’s (APA) Advanced Statistical Training in Psychology (ASTP) program. Marks was one of only 18 students in the country chosen for this honor.
The ASTP is an intensive, 9-day, hands-on seminar in which students learn about psychological statistics and research methods in a dynamic setting that emphasizes the hands-on skills it takes to analyze and interpret real data.
Nursing Professor Invited to Present at Oxford
Martha Buckner, assistant professor in the School of Nursing has been invited to present at the University of Oxford in an Oxford Round Table on Nutrition and Health being held April 2-7, 2006. Her presentation is entitled “Wellness Nutrition in the General Education Curriculum”.

The street fair features a day-long schedule of continuous Latin music performances, Latin food vendors, kid’s activities, and Latin dance groups. Admission to the event, which is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on the beautiful Belmont University campus, is free.

Nobel Prize-Winning Economist to Speak at Belmont
The Belmont Center for Business Ethics announces that Nobel Prize winning economist Dr. Robert W. Fogel of the University of Chicago will speak at Belmont on March 22. Fogel, the Charles R. Walgreen Distinguished Service Professor of American Institutions and Director of the Center for Population Economics at the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business, won the 1993 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences. His most recent book, The Fourth Great Awakening and the Future of Egalitarianism, argues that every movement for progressive economic, social and political change in U.S. history has had Christians in the vanguard.
