Students Clean Harpeth River

IMG_7400On Sept. 28, 18 Belmont University students canoed down the Harpeth River, picking up trash and debris along the way. Among the litter they collected were vinyl siding, three tires, a bike, a remote control car, an air mattress, bottles, cans and couch cushions.

“The commitment to service and work these students put in was amazing and is truly what makes Belmont such a special place. This will not be last time for this type of project,” said Assistant Director of Fitness and Recreation Jamie Zeller.

Biology and Environmental Science Students, Faculty Attend SEPEEG Conference

SEPEEG 2013 groupDr. John Niedzwiecki, associate professor of biology, and four Belmont biology and environmental science students attended the 2013 South Eastern Population Ecology and Evolutionary Genetics (SEPEEG) conference.  The 40th anniversary meeting was held at the University of Virginia’s Mountain Lake Biological Station, outside Blacksburg, Va. on Sept. 27-29. SEPEEG brings together scientists from institutions in the Southeastern United States to discuss their research on ecology, population biology, evolution and genetics.

At the Saturday evening Poster Session, Belmont students Kyle Sullinger, J. Court Reese, Hannah Martin and Valini Ramcharan presented the research projects they worked on during Summer Scholar’s  with Niedzwiecki. In addition to the Poster Session, students attended talks and interacted with graduate and undergraduate students, as well as faculty, from more than 20 Universities from across the south including University of Virginia, University of Georgia, University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, University of Florida, East Carolina University, Duke University and University of Tennessee.

Smith’s Chapter Receives Positive Review from the Scotsman

Clancy Smith, adjunct professor in the philosophy department, received a positive review in the Scotsman newspaper by lifestyle and culture critic Lee Randall for Smith’s chapter in the edited volume Tattoos and Philosophy: I Ink, Therefore I Am from Wiley-Blackwell’s “Pop Culture and Philosophy” series.  Smith’s chapter investigates the relationship between the permanence of tattoos and the protean nature of memory from a philosophical perspective. Parry Has Article Published

pam_parryPam Parry, chairwoman of the communication studies department, had an article published in the Spring 2013 issue of Synergy, a journal for graduate research published by the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg. The article is titled “Smoke Screen: A Content Analysis of Hill & Knowlton News Releases Regarding Big Tobacco from 1950-1970.”

Bennett to Receive EXCEL Award

Sybril_BennettThe International Association of Business Communicators Nashville Chapter has selected, Dr. Sybril Bennett, professor of journalism, as recipient of the EXCEL Award. Bennett will receive the award at the organization’s 2013 Gold Pen Awards ceremony on Oct. 17 at the Hard Rock Cafe in downtown Nashville, Tenn. The annual awards program honors Nashville-area business communicators for projects in diverse categories that demonstrate excellence in communications, creativity, effective strategy, and measurable results. “The Excellence in Communication Leadership” or “EXCEL Award” recognizes an individual who exhibits leadership in fostering excellence in communication.

Jamerson Publishes First Article

Japanese Officials Visit Career Services

The Career Services staff welcomed Kenichiro “Ken” Horino, senior career coordinator with the Senshu University in Japan, and Naoki Yamada, adviser for Corporate Human Resource with Bridgestone Americas Inc. Horino and Yamada visited Career Services on Sept. 11.  Horino, a Japanese colleague, met with Career Services to learn more about Belmont’s internship programs, Belmont and Beyond programs, career coaching, career assessments, career management tools, employer outreach and LinkedIn.

Al-Shamma Article Slated for Publication

Al-ShammaAssistant Professor of Theatre Jim Al-Shamma has had an article accepted for publication in the peer-reviewed journal, The Eugene O’Neill Review. The article compares the depiction of melancholy in the plays of Eugene O’Neill and Sarah Ruhl and will appear in the Spring 2014 issue.

Baldridge Recorded Works Released

Joe Baldridge-100Five of the more than 10 Keith Urban songs audio engineering technology instructor Joe Baldridge recorded over the past year made it to the official release of “Fuse.” Justin Niebank put finishing touches on the Trigger Hippy EP, which Baldridge recorded, for a fall Record Day release on vinyl. Baldridge also tracked the Jackie Greene composition “It’s Alright” this month and will track the final two songs in October on the next Black Crowes tour break. He also works with developing artist Alec Benjamin consulting with producer Sacha Skarbek and coordinating branding with Sneak Attack in New York City. Benjamin continued to grow his fan base by playing Fluxbah in Berlin, Reeperbahn in Hamburg and Enterprise in London, and Benjamin’s Mixtape 2 released to iTunes on Sept. 17.

Tough, Contreras Nominated for Dove Award

Audio Engineering Technology Assistant Professor David Tough and adjunct music faculty Billy Contreras were nominated for a Dove Award in Canada. The song “Comfort and Peace” was written by Sean Spicer, Judy Paster and Bill Dilugi. It was performed by Contreras and produced and engineered by Tough. It been nominated for Instrumental Song of the Year.
