School of Music Well Represented at Regional Vocal Competition

The Belmont University School of Music was well represented at the Mid-South Region of the National Association of Teachers of Singing competition held March 31, 2006, at Carson Newman College.
From the studio of Dr. Lawrence Bond, Jake Griffin won the Adult Beginners Division and Emily Apuzzo place second in the Senior Women’s Division.
Dr. Kristi Whitten‘s student, Ashely Kozak, won third place in the Sophomore Women’s Division.
Other students who competed were Samantha Crowder, Sarah DeVore, Reness Hussey, Meagan MacKinnon, Amanda Miller and Michael Wentz.
The competition is designed to assist classical singers preparing to launch a professional career. Over 300 singers from Kentucky and Tennessee colleges and universities competed at the Mid-South Region competition.

Littlejohn Honored at Conference

Dr. Ronnie Littlejohn, chair of the philosophy department at Belmont University, was recently honored as the “Volunteer of the Year” at the Association of Regional Centers of the Asian Studies Development Program (ASDP) at the Sheraton Hotel in Nashville.
The ASDP is a joint program of the University of Hawaii and the East-West Center initiated in 1990 to increase American understanding of the Asia-Pacific region through college and university faculty development. The ASDP mission is to infuse Asian content and perspectives into the core curriculum at Amercian two-year and four-year colleges and universities through programs that help faculty expand and refine their knowledge and teaching of Asia. The ASDP network includes over 400 colleges in 49 states with 20 schools designated as ASDP regional centers.

Alpha Chi Member Recognized Nationally

Belmont University Alpha Chi member Scott Goudeau was recently recognized as one of nine Alfred H. Nolle Scholars for 2006. Goudeau’s winning scholarly essay was read at the meeting of the Alpha Chi National Council in San Antonio.
Alpha Chi membership is the highest academic honor awarded by Belmont University. Its requirements are to be in the top 10 percent of any major in the junior and senior classes and to demonstrate outstanding moral character.

Fiesta mixes fun, education – The Tennessean

Hispanic students receive scholarships during celebration at Belmont
For some, yesterday’s Fiesta Belmont in the heart of the university’s campus here was a chance to dance, shop and savor homemade enchiladas. Latin Street Fair & “Read With Me” Make Belmont Campus A Family Destination Today

Fiesta Belmont: Nashville’s Latin Music Street Fair returns to Belmont University today (April 1). The street fair features a day-long schedule of continuous Latin music performances, Latin food vendors, kid’s activities, and Latin dance groups. Admission to the event, which is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on the beautiful Belmont University campus, is free. For more information on Fiesta Belmont, click here. Read With Me, Belmont University’s 6th Annual Family Literacy Day, will take place, rain or shine, today (April 1) from 1-4 p.m. The event is aimed at children from pre-K through grade 6 and their families and is designed to celebrate the joys of reading. BET.com Executive to Speak at Belmont Monday

rethahill.jpgRetha Hill, vice president of content development at BET.com, the website of the BET cable television network, will discuss online storytelling and how BET uses the web, during an appearance at Belmont Monday, April 3, sponsored by the New Century Journalism program. Hill will speak at 10 a.m. Monday, April 3 in room 117 of the Leu Center for the Visual Arts. Members of the media are invited to attend.

Alpha Chi Member Elected Representative for Region

IMG_0136.JPGThe Region III Convention of the Alpha Chi National Honor Scholarship
Society was held last weekend at the Hilton in Wilmington, N.C. Region
III includes Alabama, Washington, D.C., Florida, Georgia, Mississippi,
North Carolina, Puerto Rico, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia.
At the convention, Lindsey K. Winger and Mary Elizabeth Hooker
represented Belmont and made musical presentations. Lindsey and Mary
also attended the Region III business meeting. At the meeting, Lindsey
was elected to be the Student Representative for Region III, one of
only seven such students nationally. Lindsey spoke about why she
wanted to represent the region at the national level, and she was voted
into office over two other candidates. One of Belmont’s Alpha Chi
members, Scott Goudeau, won one of nine Alfred H. Nolle Scholarships
for 2006 at the national convention in San Antonio.
• Alpha Chi is a national honor society that admits students from all
academic disciplines.
• Membership is limited to the top 10 percent of an institution’s
juniors and seniors.
• Invitation to membership comes only through an institutional
chapter. A college seeking a chapter must grant baccalaureate degrees
and be regionally accredited.
• Alpha Chi has 300 chapters, located in almost every state and in
Puerto Rico, and inducts more than 11,000 members annually.
Alpha Chi’s next Induction Ceremony will take place on Friday, April 21
at 10 a.m. in the Massey Board Room. The keynote speaker will be Dr.
Andi Stepnick, Chair of the Sociology Department and recipient of the
Presidential Faculty Achievement Award for 2005-06. A reception will
take place immediately following the ceremony. All faculty, staff and
students are invited to attend. Prospective members will be asked to
designate a “faculty sponsor” who has been important in that student’s
intellectual and personal growth, and the sponsor will be asked to
“pin” the student as he or she is received into membership.

Psychology Student Presents at Major Conference

Melinda Baker, a senior Psychology and English major, has been selected
to present her research completed with Dr. Michael Sullivan, assistant
professor of psychology, “The Use of Religion to Counter Morality
Salience Cues”, at the 18th annual meeting of the Association for
Psychological Science (APS). The meeting, held May 25-28 in New York
City, drew the most presentation submissions ever; more than 50 percent
more than last year’s conference.
The Association for Psychological Science provides scientists with
opportunities essential to achieving excellence in research. To this
end, APS holds the only national Annual Convention dedicated
exclusively to scientific exchange across all areas of psychology.

Belmont Speech Team Wins 1st at Nationals

By over 100 points, the Belmont University Speech and Debate Team won first place in speech team sweeps at the National Christian College Forsenics Invititional at John Brown University. The team won third place overall. The team competed March 18 – 20 in Siloam Springs, Ark. Here is the breakdown of results:

Sarah Friederich, Renee Ryle and Price Rainer were quarterfinalists.
Prince Rainer won 9th place in novice speaker awards.
