Belmont University Entrepreneurs to Pass the Baton
Belmont students from any major can start their own businesses with financial help from the university’s Center for Entrepreneurship. For the bold, it is a business hatchery program. More cautious entrepreneurs can apply for jobs managing businesses already established through university-student partnerships like the design studio. “We want to give all of our students a chance to experience entrepreneurship first hand,” said Jeff Cornwall, [director of the program]. – From a story in today’s Nashville City Paper which looks at transitions ahead for three student-operated businesses – Boulevard Design Studio, Reverb and Feedback – created with the help of Belmont’s Center for Entrepreneurship. Vision website named Best at Southeast Journalism Conference
BelmontVision.com, the web site of the Belmont Vision student newspaper, was named Best College Web Site in the annual Best of the South competition at the Southeast Journalism Conference at Emory University Feb. 16-18. The Belmont Vision was ranked in the Top 10 college newspapers in the southeast region in stiff competition that included daily student newspapers at several large universities in the southeast, and Belmont journalism and public relations students gathered several other honors for their individual work.
ESPN’s Neal Scarbrough Kicks off Spring Journalism Speakers Series
ESPN News Editor Neal Scarbrough, a former sports editor of the Nashville Tennessean, speaks at Belmont University Monday as part of the New Century Journalism Speakers Series for the spring semester. Scarbrough, vice president and news editor at the cable sports network, speaks at 10 a.m. Monday in the Bunch Multimedia Hall on the second floor of the library. Members of the media are invited to attend. Scarbrough is one of a handful of elite journalists speaking at Belmont this spring. [Editor’s note, Feb. 13: Scarbrough’s Belmont appearance was postponed because of travel difficulties due to the blizzard in the northeast. It will be rescheduled.]
Former Vision Editor Publishes Book
Cara Davis (’00), a journalism major while a Belmont University student, recently published a book, Cheap Ways to Tie the Knot: How to Plan a Church Wedding for Less than $5000 (Relevant Books).
Davis, 27, is the editor of Radiant magazine and the editorial director of Relevant Media Group, which publishes a line of books and four magazines. She lives in Orlando, Fla., with her husband and dog, Macey.

Hare Named to All-Academic Team
Belmont University sophomore Justin Hare has been named to the 2006 Academic All-District Men’s Basketball Team.
The 6-3 guard from Cleveland, Tenn., sports a 3.81 GPA in his chosen major of exercise science and health promotion.
Hare, the reigning Atlantic Sun Conference Freshman of the Year, leads Belmont in scoring at 15.3 points per game. He also ranks among the Atlantic Sun leaders in field goal percentage (.482) and free throw percentage (.778).
Joining Hare on the District Four First Team are Brian Thornton of Xavier (OH) University, Zac Schlader of Austin Peay State University, Joe Reitz of Western Michigan University and Matt Lefeld of Bowling Green State University.
The Academic All-District teams are voted on by members of CoSida – the College Sports Information Directors of America.
All-District honorees also receive consideration for ESPN The Magazine’s Academic All-America awards.

Woolley Receives Bridgestone/Firestone Public Affairs Scholarship
Joseph Woolley received the Bridgestone/Firestone Public Affairs Scholarship for the 2005-2006 school year.
Nashville-based Bridgestone/Firestone recently established a new $2,500 Bridgestone/Firestone Public Affairs Scholarship at Belmont University. The scholarship is awarded annually to a full-time junior or senior public affairs student who demonstrates academic excellence, campus service, and professionalism. The recipient is selected by the Media Studies Department Chair and the Public Relations Director in consultation with officials at Bridgestone/Firestone, and is based on academic criteria, internship experience, references, participation in career-building activities, and demonstrated professionalism in the classroom, campus, and community.
Woolley will graduate with a Bachelor of Arts in May 2006 as a journalism major with an emphasis in convergence media. He has frequently represented Belmont University at alumni, prospective student, and other community events. His resume includes extensive internship experience with Freedom Forum First Amendment Center and Freedom Forum Diversity Institute, memberships to multiple public relations and journalism associations, and impressive volunteer work during the 2004 presidential campaign.
Ray Knight to be Featured Speaker at Baseball Lead-Off Banquet
Belmont University baseball looks to get its season off to a memorable start this year with the annual Bruin banquet. Head Coach Dave Jarvis is pleased to announce that former Major League player and manager Ray Knight will serve as this year’s featured speaker. The banquet will be held on Friday, February 10th at 6:00 pm in the Neely Black and White Dining Hall on Belmont’s campus.

Nobel Prize-Winning Economist to Speak at Belmont
The Belmont Center for Business Ethics announces that Nobel Prize winning economist Dr. Robert W. Fogel of the University of Chicago will speak at Belmont on March 22. Fogel, the Charles R. Walgreen Distinguished Service Professor of American Institutions and Director of the Center for Population Economics at the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business, won the 1993 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences. His most recent book, The Fourth Great Awakening and the Future of Egalitarianism, argues that every movement for progressive economic, social and political change in U.S. history has had Christians in the vanguard.
