Tennessee Health Care Hall of Fame Inducts Inaugural Members

The Tennessee Health Care Hall of Fame inducted its inaugural eight member class at a luncheon and ceremony in Belmont’s Curb Event Center on Monday, October 12. Hosted by Senior Policy Adviser at the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Susan Dentzer, the Hall of Fame seeks to recognize and honor the pioneers and current leaders who have formed Tennessee’s health and health care community and encourage future generations of health care professionals.

Created by Belmont University and Belmont’s McWhorter Society with the support of the Nashville Health Care Council, a Founding Partner, the event honored the Hall of Fame’s inaugural inductees which included:

  • Dr. Thomas F. Frist, Jr.: Physician and Flight Surgeon in U.S. Air Force, Co-Founder, Past Chairman and CEO of Hospital Corporation of America, Co-Founder of China Healthcare, Corporation, Member of National Healthcare Hall of Fame
  • Dr. Thomas Frist, Sr.: Cardiologist and Internist, Founder of Park View Hospital, Co-Founder of Hospital Corporation of America
  • Dr. Ernest William Goodpasture: Pathologist and Physician, Past Dean of Vanderbilt School of Medicine, Past Director of Armed Forces Institute of Pathology
  • Jack C. Massey: Co-Founder of Hospital Corporation of America, Founder and Past Board Member of Baptist Hospital
  • Clayton McWhorter: Pharmacist and Co-Founder of HealthTrust and Clayton Associates, Past President and CEO of Hospital Corporation of America, Lifetime Achievement Award from Federation of American Health Systems Recipient
  • Dr. David Satcher: 16th U.S. Surgeon General, Past Director of Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Past President of Meharry Medical College and Morehouse School of Medicine
  • Dr. Mildred T. Stahlman: Pediatrician and Pathologist, Founder of the country’s first modern neonatology intensive care unit, Pioneered the use of respiratory therapy on infants with damaged lungs, Past President of the American Pediatric Society, Distinguished Alumna of Vanderbilt University School of Medicine
  • Danny Thomas: Founder of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and ALSAC

Marlo ThomasIn a video acceptance video done on behalf of her father, Marlo Thomas said her family was incredibly touched to have Danny included in the Hall of Fame’s inaugural class. Chronicling the powerful story of St. Jude’s founding through Thomas’s prayer to the patron of hopeless causes, Marlo Thomas described her father’s dedication to providing medical care, comfort and hope to children and their families. “Thank you for recognizing our father today with this wonderful honor and for continuing to help us realize his dream that one day, no child will die in the dawn of life,” Thomas said.

College of Law Posts Highest Bar Passage Rate in the State

Class of 2015 students achieve 94 percent first-time pass rate

When the Tennessee Board of Law Examiners recently released the bar passage results for the July 2015 exam date, Belmont University College of Law attained the top spot, earning the highest bar passage rate in the state for first time test takers at ABA accredited schools. A remarkable 94 percent of Belmont’s first-time exam takers, or 75 out of 80 recent graduates, achieved a passing score on the notoriously difficult bar exam. The state average for ABA approved schools for first time test takers for the July 2015 test date is 79 percent compared with the Belmont Law pass rate of 94 percent.

Belmont Law Dean Judge Alberto Gonzales said, “I want to congratulate our graduates who passed the Tennessee Bar exam. Due to their hard work and diligence, I am proud to call them colleagues in the legal profession, and I look forward to their remarkable accomplishments in the future.”

Travis Brown, a 2015 Belmont Law graduate currently working at the Tennessee Attorney General’s Office, said, “Belmont Law not only equipped me to sit for the bar exam, but instilled in me the values that the public is looking for in attorneys. I am extremely proud of my Class of 2015.”

Earlier this year Belmont Law also posted strong employment figures, with the charter class boasting an overall employment rate of 85.7 percent.

The swearing-in ceremony for the students who pass the bar exam will be Tues., Nov. 3 at War Memorial Auditorium in downtown Nashville. For additional information on the performance of Tennessee law school graduates, details can be found on the Tennessee Board of Law Examiners website.

Belmont’s Equestrian Team Earns Top Ribbons

Belmont’s Equestrian Club won 11 ribbons at a recent Intercollegiate Horse Show Association riding competition.

The six members who competed in the hunter/jumper discipline of equestrian sports rode against schools including Vanderbilt University, University of Tennessee at Knoxville, Sewanee, Middle Tennessee State University and Murray State University.

Belmont Equestrian JumperAll of the riders representing Belmont placed in the flat and over fences classes. The flat classes require riders to control their horses by performing various gaits asked by the judge while maintaining proper equitation form. Over fences classes test riders to navigate their horses through a course over fences while maintaining proper equitation form. The horses are randomly drawn for each rider, challenging their riding ability.

“The club has several great riders this year which we proven by our ribbon placings. Even though the club is only three years old, we have grown in members and strength in riding ability over a short period of time,” said Allison Harpole, Belmont Equestrian Club president .

Ribbons won by the Belmont Equestrian Club include Allison Harpole’s 3rd and 6th places, Camila Conesa’s 1st place, Mary Ritchea’s 1st places, 6th place and Reserve Highpoint Rider designation, Meg Anderson’s 2nd and 4th places, Jillian Kimball’s 6th place and Susie Joyce’s 4th place.

ENACTUS, Susan Williams Nominated for 12th and Broad Awards

The Spring Back Recycling project through ENACTUS and Susan Williams have been nominated in different categories for the 12th and Broad awards, and both are listed on the final ballots. There is online voting, and the winners in each category will be featured in the January magazine.

Professor Emerita of Management Williams is nominated in the Educator/Mentor category, described as “a person who inspired, taught and mentored a sizable number of others in the local community to be their personal and professional best. They might be a teacher, preacher, guru, coach, consultant, instructor, etc.”

Spring Back Recycling seeks to offer disenfranchised men transitional, earned-income and employment opportunities and to create a recycling alternative to repurposing or landfilling used mattresses and box springs. The business was started by Belmont Enactus in 2010, and is nominated under the Social Enterprise category. To date, more than 3.7 millions pound of mattresses have been recycled through this social enterprise.

Mills Publishes Journal Article on Rubric Assessment

Mills_headshotCoordinator of Research Services in Bunch Library and Associate Professor Jenny Mills co-authored an article, “Project RAILS: Lessons Learned about Rubric Assessment of Information Literacy Skills,” with librarians from the University of Washington, Bothell, Dominican University, Towson University and Syracuse University. The article appears in the October 2015 issue of portal: Libraries and the Academy.

The result of a research project that began in 2010, the authors developed recommendations for rubric assessment of information literacy skills based on experiences at their institutions and focused on four areas: building successful collaborative relationships, developing assignments, creating and using rubrics and using assessment results to improve instruction and assessment practices. Trowbridge Earns Accreditation in Public Relations

Kevin TrowbridgeAssistant Professor of Public Relations Dr. Kevin S. Trowbridge recently completed the examination for Accreditation in Public Relations, earning him the professional designation. The announcement was made by the Universal Accreditation Board (UAB), a consortium of nine professional communication organizations that directs this competency certification program.

“Earning the APR reflects a mastery of the knowledge, skills and abilities needed to succeed in our increasingly complex profession,” said John E. Forde, Ph.D., APR, Fellow PRSA, 2015 UAB. “Practitioners who achieve the designation are demonstrating their commitment not only to our profession, but also to a strong code of ethics and to the betterment of their organizations and clients.”

The Accreditation program aims to improve the practice of public relations by assessing competence in 60 areas of knowledge, skills and abilities associated with the profession. The examination is designed for public relations professionals with five to seven years of job experience and/or a degree in a communication field. Candidates who successfully complete the rigorous process, including presenting his/her portfolio to a readiness review panel of three peers and sitting for a computer-based examination, are granted the APR.

“As an educator, I continually challenge students to grow as young professionals who think critically and creatively about the dynamic practices of strategic communication and how it can be used to transform the world around them,” Trowbridge said. “This achievement reflects my own commitment to lifelong learning and continuous professional development.”

Prior to becoming a full-time educator and earning his Ph.D., Trowbridge practiced public relations in various settings including nonprofit, education, corporate and finance. He joined the faculty at Belmont in 2011.

 

Alumnae, Faculty Earn Tennessee Art Education Awards

Senior Shannon Carey was recently awarded the 2015 Tennessee Art Education Association’s (TAEA) Pre-Service Teacher of the Year, the first Belmont student to receive this award. Emily Sanford, a Belmont 2014 art education graduate, was awarded the 2015 TATE First Year Teacher of the Year Award. Carey and Sanford will be honored at the Fall TAEA State Conference in late October and are eligible for consideration for national awards.

Assistant Professor of Art and Art Education Program Coordinator Dr. Justin Makemson was recently awarded the 2015 TAEA Student Chapter Sponsor of the Year. Of his award Makemson said, “This honor is a testament to the hard work of my students.”

AED Club Members Participate in 2015 Nashville Heart Walk

Nine members from Belmont’s Alpha Epsilon Delta (AED) Pre-Health Honor Society participated in the 2015 Greater Nashville Heart Walk on Saturday, October 3.

The Heart Walk is a 5K and fundraiser for the American Heart Association. AED is the National Health Pre-Professional Honor Society dedicated to the encouragement and recognition of excellence in pre-professional health scholarship including medicine, dentistry, veterinary and others. The Society welcomes all students engaged in the pursuit of a professional healthcare career.

Giordano Publishes Psychological Science Article

Pete GiordanoProfessor of Psychological Science Dr. Pete Giordano recently published an article titled “Being or Becoming: Toward an Open-System, Process-Centric Model of Personality” in Integrative Psychological and Behavioral Science.

This journal explores the cultural nature of human conduct and its evolutionary history, anthropology, ethology and communication processes between people and within, as well as between,
societies.

Belmont’s Curb College Continues Partnership with Sony/ATV Music Publishing

As part of its continued effort to connect students with industry professionals, The Mike Curb College of Entertainment & Music Business at Belmont University will once again partner with Sony/ATV Music Publishing for the “All Access” program which gives students a pathway to share their talent and work with the world’s leading music publisher and gives the Sony/ATV team the opportunity to discover potential talent at Belmont University.

Sony/ATV Music Publishing SVP of Nashville A&R Josh Van Valkenburg said, “SonyATV is incredibly proud to continue this partnership with Belmont. We saw and heard some amazing talent last year, and actually signed one of the students who performed! Belmont continues to be an innovative educational leader by developing opportunities like All Access, and we feel confident we will receive even more impressive submissions from Belmont students this year.”

Through the program, students will have the opportunity to have two songs reviewed by the Sony/ATV Music Publishing Creative Team. The Creative Team will then select a limited number of students to perform their songs live for the SONY/ATV team at a showcase held during the semester. After the live performances, the SONY/ATV team may continue to develop their relationships with certain students beyond the All Access program.

James I. Elliott, Chair of Songwriting in the Curb College of Entertainment and Music Business, added, “This is a wonderful opportunity for our students to have their music heard by Troy Tomlinson, Josh Van Valkenburg and the SonyATV Creative Team. We look forward to the process and have high hopes that Sony ATV Music Publishing will discover some future hit makers at Belmont.”
