Music Business Students to Benefit from Curb Buying Historic Studios

Music mogul Mike Curb, for whom Belmont’s Curb College of Entertainment and Music Business is named, has purchased the property that includes the historic Studio A and Quonset Hut recording studios on Nashville’s Music Row, and his plans for the building include more learning space for Belmont’s music business students. Casting Call for The Apprentice at Belmont Saturday

apprentice.jpgAn open casting call for one of network television’s hottest reality shows, NCB’s The Apprentice, comes to Belmont University on Saturday, July 23rd. If you’ve ever watched the show and thought, “I could win,” this is your opportunity. The casting call interviews, in the Beaman A&B rooms at the Curb Event Center/Beaman Student Life Center complex, begin at 10 a.m., but wristband distribution starts at 9 a.m. and only those with wristbands will be seen. You’ll need to bring your completed application, which you can download from the link here.

Spring 2005 Circle

Mythic Power

Dr. Amy Sturgis, professor of liberal studies, comments on the power and popularity of myths in literature and movies, in an article in the July 10 Denver Post that examines why “America’s 21st century has been particularly awash in it, with a bulk of the age’s signature entertainment events reveling in myth.”

Marketable Skills

Dr. Jeff Cornwall, director of the Center for Entrepreneurship at Belmont University, is quoted in this week’s Nashville Business Journal, discussing why economics is a popular undergraduate major these days. Cornwall “says the upswing correlates with perceptions about finding post-graduate jobs,” reports NBJ.

Dr. Bennett Named Educator in the Newsroom Fellow

sybril.JPGDr. Sybril Bennett, executive director of Belmont’s New Century Journalism program, recently was named a 2005 Educator in the Newsroom Fellow by the Radio and Television News Directors Foundation. As part of the fellowship, Bennett spent a month working for WTVF-TV (NewsChannel5) in Nashville. Now in its sixth year, EIN Fellowships place broadcast journalism professors in radio or television newsrooms for a month-long work experience each summer.

Cusic Appearances on CMT

Country Music Television (CMT) presented a special on patriotic songs over the July 4 holiday and Don Cusic, professor of music business at Belmont, was a special commentator on the show. Featured artists on the show included Aaron Tippin, Bill Anderson, Darryl Worley, Chely Wright and others. Cusic is also a special commentator on a show featuring “Independence Day” by Martina McBride.

Ukraine Journal Chronicles Sports Evangelism Mission Trip

bettywisemanukraine.jpgThe students, faculty and staff members who participated in a sports evangelism mission trip to Ukraine in June have returned, but the trip itself lives on in The Ukraine Journal, an online trip diary about the mission trip to the cities of Kiev and Zhitomir.

Dr. Susan West Promoted to Associate VP

susanwest.jpgDr. Susan West has been promoted to the position of Associate Vice President for Presidential Affairs at Belmont University. In this role Dr. West will continue to execute presidential initiatives and will also provide oversight for Curb Event Center operations, the Athletics Department, and Auxiliary Services. Dr. West recently received a Doctorate in Higher Education Administration from Peabody College, Vanderbilt University’s college of education and human development.

Cusic Featured on CMT July 4th

Country Music Television (CMT) will present a special on the “Greatest Patriotic Songs” in country music history over the July 4th holiday and Don Cusic, professor of Music Business at Belmont University, is a special commentator on this show. The show will premier on Saturday evening, July 2, at 9 p.m. CDT. Featured artists on the show include Aaron Tippin, Bill Anderson, Darryl Worley, Chely Wright and others. The show will be repeated on Monday, July 4th at 11:30 a.m. CDT. Precedding the July 4th show will be a special feature on the song “Independence Day” by Martina McBride; Cusic is also a special commentator on the show.
