Dr. Philip Johnston, dean of the School of Pharmacy, has received notice that the journal Pediatrics has accepted for immediate publication the manuscript “Parental Misinterpretations of Over-the-Counter (OTC) Pediatric Cough and Cold Medication Labels,” which was authored by a five-person Vanderbilt University Medical Center/Belmont University School of Pharmacy research team.
Recognizing the importance of this study to current national concern for children’s safety, the federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has requested permission from the team and from Pediatrics to include this study (pre-publication) into its current deliberations to craft revisions to cough and cold product labeling guidelines.

Business Dean Publishes Book on Debt Crises
Dr. Patrick Raines, dean of Belmont University’s College of Business Administration and professor of economics, recently published his third book with Dr. Charles Leathers, titled Debt, Innovations and Deflation (Edward Elgar Publishing). Insightful and timely in light of current fiscal conditions, the book examines the historical perspectives of great economists on previous debt-induced economic disruptions. Raines also shared his business expertise and ideas from the book during interviews last week with international media who were in Nashville for the 2008 Town Hall Presidential Debate, including conversations with both the BBC and NPR about the current global financial crisis.
“The past several years have ushered in a new era in economic policy issues,” Raines said. “After decades of concern over inflation, studies indicate that we now face the potentially greater danger of deflation. Our book analyzes whether post-World War II capitalist economies can rely on policies and institutional reforms to keep an inherent tendency toward deflation in check.”
Bisson Publishes Fifth Edition of Textbook
Dr. Doug Bisson, professor of history, was recently informed that the fifth edition of his two-volume textbook, A History of England (Prentice Hall, 2009), has just been published. Bisson revised much of the two volumes during his sabbatical leave last fall.

Graduate Business School Featured in Princeton Review
Belmont University’s Jack C. Massey Graduate School of Business is an outstanding graduate business school, according to the Princeton Review. The New York-based education services company features the school in the just-published 2009 edition of its Best 296 Business Schools (Random House / Princeton Review, Oct. 7, 2008).
This is the fourth consecutive year that The Massey School has been listed in Princeton Review’s ranking of best business schools. “It further demonstrates that we are in the company of the elite business programs in the country,” said Massey Dean Pat Raines.

Warren Named A-Sun Golfer of the Month
A year after winning the Atlantic Sun’s Player of the Year award, Belmont’s Lorie Warren enjoyed success in the summer in capturing the Tennessee Amateur and it continued in September as she parlayed two top-three finishes to win her third A-Sun Golfer of the Month award, the conference office announced on Wednesday. School of Nursing Selected for National Research Study
The School of Nursing was recently chosen along with nine other schools to participate in a major national research study. The National League for Nursing will collaborate with Laerdal Medical Corporation and the American Heart Association to determine how pre-licensure RN nursing students best retain CPR knowledge and skills. Different approaches to learning Basic Life Support (BLS) will be tested by students at the 10 selected schools of nursing.
Biles’ Paper Accepted for Publication
Dr. Danny Biles, associate professor in the Mathematics and Computer Science Department, recently had a paper accepted for publication. The paper is titled “Numerical Approximation for Singular Second Order Differential Equations” and will be published by Mathematical and Computer Modeling.
Men’s Basketball Picked to Defend A-Sun Title
Belmont University men’s basketball has been named the preseason favorite to defend its Atlantic Sun Conference regular season and tournament titles. The Bruins, who have represented the Atlantic Sun Conference in each of the last three NCAA Tournaments, return nine key contributors to a team that came within an eyelash of defeating three-time National Champion Duke in the 2008 NCAA Tournament. Belmont received top billing from both the conference coaches and media members. The Bruins garnered first-place votes from seven of the 11 head coaches and 25 of the 33 voting media members. Julseth Provides Keynote at Foreign Language Conference
Dr. David Julseth (Foreign Languages) was the keynote speaker at the West Tennessee Foreign Language Teachers Conference held at Lambuth University in Jackson, Tenn. on Sept. 20. His address was on “Service-Learning in the Context of the MLA Report on Foreign Languages and Higher Education.”
