Belmont University moved up four spots in the latest annual ranking of America’s best colleges and universities from U.S. News & World Report magazine and is now ranked as one of the 15 best universities in the south in the “Best Universities-Masters” category. Belmont is the highest-ranked Tennessee school in the Master’s category, which includes 130 schools across the south, including 14 in Tennessee. Other top Master’s institutions include such schools as Rollins College, James Madison University, Mercer University, Samford University and The Citadel. The rankings in the America’s Best Colleges 2006 guide are based on several quality indicators including student retention rates, graduation rates, student-faculty ratios and scores on college entrance exams.

Volunteer State Community College has joined the Partners in Nursing Consortium, a long-term partnership between Belmont University, HCA’s TriStar Health System and other select Tennessee colleges and universities, an initiative created to address the growing shortage of registered nurses in Tennessee.
Summer Commencement Adds 182 New Alumni
Belmont University celebrated its largest-ever summer commencement with the graduation of 182 undergraduate and graduate students on Friday, August 12, at Curb Event Center. The summer 2005 graduating class includes 109 students receiving graduate degrees and 73 students receiving bachelor’s degrees.
Women’s Basketball Has Ninth-Best GPA Among NCAA Div. I Teams
The Belmont women’s basketball team has been recognized for having one of the highest grade point averages (GPA) among NCAA Division I teams by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA). The Bruins concluded the 2004-05 season with a 3.392 team GPA, good for ninth-best in the nation on the WBCA 2005 Academic Top 25 Team Honor Roll. Belmont is the only Atlantic Sun Conference representative, the only private college or university and the only university from the Southeastern part of the United States on the list. Belmont Student Studies Migrating Armadillos – Nashville City Paper
Lee Griggs, a senior biology major at Belmont University, has been conducting a study on the armadillo in Middle Tennessee since July, asking people who spot them to report on their findings. The study, which will run through December, aims to observe the gradual movement of the non-native animals from West Tennessee toward Davidson County. The mammals are considered pests for many citizens, tearing up topsoil in search of food and shelter. Griggs hopes the project will help shed light in an area that has had very little previous attention. Read the whole story in the Nashville City Paper. Belmont University has scheduled a news conference for 1:30 p.m., Monday, August 15, to announce a significant partnership announcement regarding its Partners in Nursing Consortium, a long-term partnership between Belmont University, HCA and TriStar Health System, and other select Tennessee colleges and universities. The consortium was created to address the growing shortage of registered nurses in Tennessee. The press conference will be in front of construction site where the Gordon E. Inman Health Sciences Building is now under construction along Wedgewood Avenue on the campus of Belmont University.

Public Relations Program Launches PRSSA Chapter
Club to Consider Starting Real PR FirmThe Board of Directors of the Public Relations Society of America has granted a charter to Belmont University to establish a chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America. The charter caps an incredible first year for the Public Relations Program, which in its first year was one of the fastest growing academic programs at Belmont. The PRSSA chapter is considering partnering with the university’s Center for Entrepreneurship to launch a real student-managed public relations firm.
Belmont’s Ocean Way Nashville Studio Hires New Manager
The Ocean Way Nashville recording studio has announced a change in the management with the hiring of Glenda Cones as studio manager. Cones, who has been with the studio’s parent company Belmont University for almost a decade, was formerly director of strategic programs for the Mike Curb College of Entertainment and Music Business. “Ocean Way has always been committed to setting a new standard in the recording industry,” Cones told Mix magazine. “I am honored to be a part of it and thrilled with the challenge of continuing to move that bar.”
Blogging Documentary Partially Filmed at Belmont
Two clips from the forthcoming documentary film documentary:BLOG, filmed partially in Nashville at the BlogNashville conference at Belmont University last May, have been posted online here at the film’s weblog, www.documentaryblog.com. Much of the filming for the documentary took place inside Belmont’s Beaman Student Life Center, the Vince Gill Room and the Massey Performing Arts Center. The voice you hear at the beginning of the clip titled “BlogStar” is that of Dr. Sybril Bennett, executive director of Belmont’s New Century Journalism program.
