As a part of its Conversations @ Belmont series, the Biology Department and Office of Academic Outreach, hosted “Let’s Talk about…Biology” on Mon., November 7. Belmont biology faculty and staff hosted dinner for high school teachers in Middle Tennessee, offering conversation and lab explorations for the teachers.

BU Students Compete in Programming Competition
Belmont students Sergei Temkin, Ben Tate and David Ells won second place site honors at the 30th annual ACM International Collegiate Programming Competition, held on November 5, 2005. The trio bested 14 teams from seven schools, bested only by one of the three teams from Vanderbilt University. A second Belmont team consisting of Jake Eichenberger, Nathan Davis and Stuart Childs placed ninth at the site.
This is Belmont’s second year in a row to win site honors. Last year, a Belmont team won first place at the TTU Site, out of 14 teams competing.
Speech & Debate Team Successful at Recent Competition
The Belmont University Speech & Debate team recently traveled to Berea, Ky., to compete against 22 other colleges and universities at Berea College. Belmont’s team won several awards, listed below:

Biology Students Present Posters at Conference
Belmont biology students will present posters at the 115th meeting of the Tennessee Academy of Science. The annual meeting will be held November 17-18 at The University of Tennessee at Martin in Martin, Tenn.

BU Psychology Club Volunteers with Graceworks
The Psychology Club at Belmont University recently served Graceworks, a charity in Franklin, Tenn. Students from the group helped Graceworks sort clothes and other donations for hurricane relief.
High School Students Study Environment at Belmont
The Office of Academic Outreach for the College of Arts & Sciences at Belmont University hosted high school students on the Belmont campus for “Explorations in Environmental Studies,” a free workshop for high school sophomores and juniors. The high school students participated in demonstrations and hands-on lab activities led by Belmont students and faculty.
Elliott pens Number One Song with Steven Curtis Chapman
James I. Elliott, assistant professor in the Curb College of Entertainment & Music Business at Belmont, recently returned to the top of the Radio & Records Inspirational chart as co-writer of “Believe Me Now,” the latest single from Steven Curtis Chapman’s All Things New album. The hit single spent 16 weeks on the national chart and marks the fourth time Elliott has co-written a number one song with Chapman.
Jordan-Lake’s Book, Whitewashing Uncle Tom’s Cabin, Published
Whitewashing Uncle Tom’s Cabin, a new book by Belmont University professor Dr. Joy Jordan-Lake, has been published by Vanderbilt University Press. The book – its full title is Whitewashing Uncle Tom’s Cabin: Nineteenth-Century Women Novelists Respond to Stowe – explores how women novelists of the first half of the 18th century tried to counter Harriet Beecher Stowe’s classic indictment of slavery, Uncle Tom’s Cabin, by preaching a “theology of whiteness” from the pages of their own novels.
Alpha Chi Inducts New Members
Membership to the Alpha Chi National Honor Scholarship Society is the highest academic honor award by Belmont University. Its requirements are to be in the top 10 percent academically of all students and to be of junior or senior class rank. Alpha Chi members are nominated by the faculty and must have “outstanding moral character” and display leadership, integrity and service.
Belmont University inducted 41 new members into Alpha Chi at a ceremony on Wed., November 9.
