Vision website named Best at Southeast Journalism Conference

sejcstudents.jpgbelmontvisioncover.jpgBelmontVision.com, the web site of the Belmont Vision student newspaper, was named Best College Web Site in the annual Best of the South competition at the Southeast Journalism Conference at Emory University Feb. 16-18. The Belmont Vision was ranked in the Top 10 college newspapers in the southeast region in stiff competition that included daily student newspapers at several large universities in the southeast, and Belmont journalism and public relations students gathered several other honors for their individual work.


In addition to the first place finish for the student newspaper’s web site and the top-ten ranking for the Vision, nine Belmont University students were recognized at the conference Belmont’s winners in the Best of the South competition, in which professional journalists from around the country judge work from student publications in the past year and rank the Top 10, include:
Nathan Baker, No. 4, feature writing; Stephen Strother, No. 6, arts and entertainment writing; Chansin Bird, No. 7, news writing; and Darren Lowry No. 7, sports writing.
The conference also featured an on-site competition in which student journalists attending the conference are given assignments and have one hour to write in a supervised setting. Belmont also had a strong showing in the on-site competition, finishing fourth overall. Individual winners included April Watkins, first, media ethics; the team of Rebecca Neenan, Krista Farmer and Anne Roberts, second, public relations; Darren Lowry, third, sports writing; Nathan Baker, third, feature writing; Katie Harp, third, entertainment writing.
Belmont’s Department of Media Studies offers quality instruction in programs designed for professional media communicators of the 21st century, including majors in Audio and Video Production, Mass Communication, Journalism and Public Relations. The Department opened a a new 7,000-square-foot Media Studies Center in 2004, housing a multi-media instructional computer lab, the award-winning Belmont Vision student newspaper and website, the campus radio station, a broadcast studio, editing suites and a student lounge.
