Scarlett Leadership Institute Announces 2009 Business Workshops Schedule

Expanding upon its already successful member programs in leadership development and corporate management education, the Scarlett Leadership Institute at Belmont University announced today the launch of a series of workshop sessions that will be open to the broader business community. All of the Institute’s programs, including the new workshops, model a “learn it today, apply it tomorrow” mindset where students and organizations are encouraged to learn not only from world class leaders, but from each other.
The schedule for the Institute’s 2009 workshops is as follows:
Entrepreneurship Business Plan Boot Camp
Dates: Feb. 19, Feb. 26, March 19
Facilitator: Dr. Jeff Cornwall
Dr. Jeff Cornwall is the Jack C. Massey Chair in Entrepreneurship at Belmont University. In the late 1980s, he co-founded and served as President/CEO for Atlantic Behavioral Health Systems. His company operated a variety of health care facilities and programs and employed more than 300 people. After nine years of rapid growth, and negotiating the sale of most of the corporations’ business interests, he returned to academics. He has authored or co-authored six books on entrepreneurship, and in 2006, he was named a Fellow of the United States Association for Small Business and Entrepreneurship (USASBE). In 2008, Belmont University’s Center for Entrepreneurship received the USASBE National Model Undergraduate Program of the Year Award. His web log site, The Entrepreneurial Mind, is one of the most popular small business blogs on the web and was named by Forbes as a “Best of the Web” and is part of the Forbes blog network. His blog is also linked to by Entrepreneur, Inc., and US News and World Report.

His proven track record as an executive sales leader with several Fortune 1000 companies as well as his research on over 15,000 salespeople and sales managers across the globe uniquely qualified him to form the Boyens Group® in 1998.

Paul Levesque (pronounced “Luh-VECK”) is an acclaimed author, seminar leader and public speaker with two decades’ experience as an international business consultant. His special expertise lies in helping businesses of all kinds plan for—and implement—profound culture change within their respective organizational settings. In particular, he helps them build what he describes as a “flashpoint” culture, in which employee motivation and customer satisfaction are strategically linked to make dramatic and lasting improvements in both.
Negotiation: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
Dates: April 16-17, Nov. 19-20
Facilitator: Dr. Susan Williams
Dr. Susan Williams is a professor of management in Belmont University’s Jack C. Massey Graduate School of Business. Her teaching interests include negotiation, decision making, continuous improvement and strategic thinking. Dr. Williams came to Belmont in 1989 and has served the university in several capacities, most recently as vice president of administration and planning, before returning to the classroom full-time in 2001. In addition, Dr. Williams is an active public speaker and consultant on topics related to management. Representative clients include Penn State University, The United Methodist Church, Vanderbilt University, AAA, Disney and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. She recently completed a three-year appointment as a judge for the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, a Secretary of Commerce appointment.
Difficult Business Conversations
Dates: May 29, Oct. 22
Facilitator: Douglas Stone
Doug Stone is a managing partner at Triad Consulting Group and a lecturer on law at Harvard Law School. Through Triad, he consults to a wide range of organizations, including Fidelity, Honda, HP, IBM, Merck, Microsoft and Shell. He has worked with mediators and journalists in South Africa, political and community leaders in Cyprus, doctors and executives at the World Health Organization, and diplomats at the former Organization of African Unity in Ethiopia. Doug is co-author, along with Bruce Patton and Sheila Heen, of Difficult Conversations: How to Discuss What Matters Most (Penguin, 2000), a New York Times’ Business Bestseller. His articles on negotiation and conflict resolution have appeared in the New York Times and the Los Angeles Times, the as well as in magazines like Parents and Real Simple. He has appeared on TV and radio, including “Oprah,” and was a key-note speaker at the 2006 World Negotiation Forum in Brazil.
