Belmont Starts New Student-Run Showcase for Unsigned Artists

Belmont University music business students are getting first-hand experience discovering new talent, via a new student-run music showcase series at the Curb Café at the Curb Event Center on the Belmont campus. The showcase, the first in a new monthly series for unsigned artists, is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Oct. 4th. This new showcase series “is dedicated to providing a venue for unsigned artists to present themselves to the local music industry,” says David Herrara, instructor of music business in the Mike Curb College of Entertainment & Music Business.

Herrera, the faculty advisor for the project, says the showcase series was created after interest from local record companies.
“Several of the local record companies expressed an interest in creating a student group that could help undiscovered talent not typically available to the typical record company system,” he said.
Herrera says that students are free to locate and present bands in a showcase to be presented once a month at the curb café. Local Record companies will be solicited for attendance. Unsigned artists and bands should submit a tape, bio, and photo if available. “We are looking for unique talent with a unique sound,” Herrara said. He stressed that the showcase is not exclusively for Belmont artists.
Any interested bands or musician should send tapes to Exposure/College of Entertainment and Music Business, Belmont University, 1900 Belmont Blvd. Nashville TN. 37212.
The Oct. 4 showcase features three unsigned artists selected by students including the pop/rock group The Verge and singer/songwriters Clay Cumbie and Carrie Hickman. Students from the College of Entertainment & Music Business will produce the showcase. There is no admission charge and the show is open to all the public. The Curb Café is located on the Belmont Boulevard side of the Belmont campus.
Vonne Marshall a senior in the music business program, called the showcase “a great supplement to our classroom lectures.
“We get to do what we talk about in class,” Marshall said.
