Paper profiles Belmont grad’s innovative music/PE program for kindergarteners

The Tennessean reports on a Belmont University alumnus who is integrating PE and music in an innovative way for kindergarteners.

Born out of necessity, Battle Ground Academy’s kindergarten music movement class has found a meaningful way to blend music and physical education each day for its youngest students.

Music teacher Lauren Baker said the school has been adding a section to each grade and was running out of time to provide both music and physical education to every student every day. Last year, an assistant music teacher was hired to teach fourth-grade and the physical education teacher cut kindergarten out of his schedule, so Baker began putting together a curriculum to combine music and physical education for kindergartners.
”I looked at the curriculum for PE and music, and there are many similarities for that age,” Baker said. ”So the two integrate well together.”

Lauren (Wilkerson) Baker graduated from Belmont in 1993 and is the wife of Grover C. Baker III, music/education services asistant at the Bunch Library.
