Belmont’s Higgins Receives Award for Excellence

Dr. Leslie Higgins, Belmont University’s Director of Graduate Studies in Nursing, has been awarded the Tennessee State Award for Excellence as a Nurse Practitioner. This award is given yearly by the Academy of Nurse Practitioners to someone who displays excellence as a nurse practitioner.

“Dr. Higgins sets high standards for students, makes students aware of those standards, and continuously and consistently helps students to achieve and reach their goals,’ said Dr. Debra Wollaber, Dean of the College of Health Sciences at Belmont University. “I can think of no other nurse practitioner that has made as great an impact on the profession as Dr. Higgins.”
In accepting her award, Higgins said, “When I take care of patients, I am able to touch one life at a time, and when I teach my students and they go out and practice, it touches a lot more people.”
Higgins has been a nurse practitioner for over twenty years and is responsible for developing, implementing, evaluating and revising the graduate nurse practitioner program at the School of Nursing at Belmont. She will be featured at the National Conference for the Academy of Nurse Practitioners June 28-July 3 in Anaheim, California and recognized at the meeting as the Tennessee State award recipient.
