Belmont adds Montessori program – Nashville City Paper

Nashville’s first Montessori teacher preparation program will open at Belmont University in June and draw on partnerships with area Montessori schools. Montessori is an educational approach based on the philosophy of Dr. Maria Montessori, who believed children learn and develop best in an environment specially prepared to meet the needs of childhood. Some of the principles include allowing children to learn at their own pace and promoting peace by teaching respect for self, others and the environment.

The Nashville area has about a dozen Montessori schools including two public Montessori schools, according to Belmont Montessori Program Director Dr. Merrie King. Up to this point, people had to leave the area to be trained to teach according to the Montessori philosophy, King said. She said it is the first university-based Montessori preparation program in Nashville. The Belmont program will offer an undergraduate Montessori certification program for non-traditional students and a graduate program with an option to earn a Tennessee teaching license. – Read the whole story in the Nashville City Paper.
