Addressing the Nursing Shortage

NursingMeeting.jpegBelmont University and Dr. Debra Wollaber, Dean of the Belmont University College of Health Sciences and the School of Nursing, hosted the Tennessee Center for Nursing’s statewide conference Thursday in the Massey Board Room. On the agenda: a discussion of how the nursing schools across Tennessee can increase their student capacity, in order to produce more nurses and offset a looming shortage of nurses, by both increasing faculty and increasing building capacity.

Representatives from most of Tennessee’s nursing schools heard presentations from officials from Nevada, New Mexico, North Carolina and Virginia on how they have addressed the same issue. The program was funded by a grant from the Tennessee Hospital Association’s Center for Health Workforce Development. The goal: a Nursing Education Master Plan for Tennessee that will increase enrollment in nursing schools and solve faculty and facility limitations at Tennessee’s schools of nursing.
